Essay Topics:

Short Essay #1

Option 1. In January 1999, the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged world business leaders to embrace and enact the United Nations Global Compact. The Compact seeks support to ten principles of human rights, labour, environmental sustainability, and anti-corruption, as they apply to business practices and public policy. Since then, almost 4000 members from 100 different countries have joined the initiative. Some experts, however, argue that the Compact is ineffective due to its voluntary nature, as well as lack of monitoring and transparency in reporting progress. In your opinion, is the Global Compact an effective tool in setting higher standards of responsible leadership? Please illustrate your answer with a real-life example.

Option 2. Since its inception, the United Nations Security Council has passed over 1800 resolutions aiming to tackle various security threats worldwide. However, the Council is still criticized by many sides for failing to carry through its mandate and to act effectively on global challenges under its jurisdiction. Based on the UNSC Resolution(s) of your choice, please argue how effective or ineffective was the UNSC in tackling and/or eliminating the threat under concern, its sources and consequences.

Option 3. In 1997 in the framework of the Millenium Project, the World Federation of UN Associations published "State of the Future" report, which identified 15 global challenges facing humanity, including sustainable development, clean water, population and resources, democratization, long-term perspectives, global convergence of IT, rich-poor gap, health issues, capacity to decide, peace and conflict, status of women, transnational organized crime, energy, science and technology and global ethics. Which of these challenges is/are the most pressing and relevant in your community? What has been done so far to combat or eliminate the negative effects of this Challenge? Are there ways of transforming this Challenge into an Opportunity for your community?

Short Essay #2

Option 1. If you were the key head figure in your country's government, what immediate decisions would you make to tackle the most pressing economic, social and/or political problems? How easy do you think it would be to implement these decisions and what effects would they have?

Option 2. How does the lack of responsible leadership in decision makers on various levels, from government officials to company management and other trusted positions, directly or indirectly relate to the global economic crisis affecting the world today? As future leaders, what lessons can you gain from this crisis?

Option 3. Leaders are thought to have a number of skills and qualities that help them in achieving great results. As a future leader, which skills and qualities do you think will help you the most in achieving leadership positions? Which skills do you feel need to be developed further? How do you plan to develop them?
